Installation & Setup

Install the Device App or Device Service and connect your printers and scales

Installation & Setup

This guide covers installing a Device Hub client on your warehouse computers and connecting your printers and scales. For a comparison of the two client options, see Device Hub Overview.

Download

Download the latest installers from:

Installers can be copied over a network or USB drive and reused on multiple machines. You do not need to log in to ShipStream on each device.

Install the Device App

The Device App is a Windows GUI application for single-user workstations.

Setup Steps

  1. Download the Device App installer from devices.shipstream.io/downloads
  2. Run the installer. You may see a Windows SmartScreen warning since the installer is new to Microsoft's scanner. The installers are signed by ShipStream, LLC and are safe to install.
  3. Once installation completes, the Device App will display a 4-digit PIN
  4. In the Device Hub dashboard, click New Computer and enter the PIN
  5. Optionally provide a nickname for easy identification

The Device App starts automatically when the installing user logs in to Windows. It runs in the system tray when the window is closed.

The Device App only runs for the user who installed it. When that user logs out, the app shuts down and devices disconnect from the Device Hub.

For complete step-by-step instructions with screenshots, see the ShipStream Knowledge Base: Install the Device App.

Install the Device Service

The Device Service runs as a Windows background service, ideal for multi-user or headless environments.

Setup Steps

  1. Download the Device Service installer from devices.shipstream.io/downloads
  2. Run the installer as an Administrator
  3. After installation, the registration page opens automatically at http://localhost:7447 showing a 4-digit PIN
  4. In the Device Hub dashboard, click New Computer and enter the PIN
  5. Optionally provide a nickname for easy identification

The Device Service starts automatically with Windows and remains running regardless of which user is logged in.

For complete step-by-step instructions with screenshots, see the ShipStream Knowledge Base: Install the Device Service.

Register a Computer

After installing either client, you need to register the computer in Device Hub:

  1. Open the Device Hub dashboard (in your ShipStream WMS under System > Device Hub, or through the Data Border portal)
  2. Click the green + New Computer button
  3. Enter the 4-digit PIN displayed by the Device App or Device Service
  4. Optionally enter a Nickname to identify the computer
  5. Click Register

The computer now appears in the Device Hub list. If it disconnects (network interruption or client shutdown), it will reappear with its saved configuration when reconnected.

Adding Printers

  1. In Device Hub, click + Add Device next to the connected machine
  2. Set a unique Device ID (e.g., "001", "002"). This ID is used in ShipStream as a barcode value like LABEL:001 or LASER:001
  3. Select the Device (printer) from the dropdown. Only printers installed in Windows with correct drivers will appear.
  4. Configure Advanced Options if needed:
    • Label Printers: Paper Type, DPI
    • Laser Printers: Paper Type, Color, Paper Source
  5. Add optional Tags for filtering
  6. Click Save

Changing a printer's name in Windows will cause Device Hub to no longer recognize it. Keep printer names consistent.

Adding Scales

  1. In Device Hub, click + Add Device and choose the Scale device type
  2. Set a unique Device ID (e.g., "001"). Referenced as SCALE:001 in ShipStream.
  3. Choose detection method:
    • Scan - Automatically detects connected scales with weight readings
    • Manual - Select USB or Serial connection type and configure port settings
  4. For serial scales, configure: Port, Baudrate (usually 9600), Print Command, and Terminator
  5. Click Test to verify the scale responds correctly
  6. Click Save

For detailed instructions on all device configuration options, see the ShipStream Knowledge Base: Adding Printer and Scale Devices.
